meteorologist darren peck is in our virtual view studio tracking the gusts and looking forward to the weekend. >> the bigger issue today, besides any light rain, will be the wind. if you look up the coast, you can see these 40 miles per hour gusts moving along the coastline. let's get specific. what does that mean for your part of the bay? 40 miles per hour gusts are pretty much exclusive to the coastline and maybe the hill, through san mateo county and marin. if you look inland, the rest of us have a 25 miles per hour breeze. that, more importantly than anything else, will make the day feel cooler. it will give you a wind-chill factor. temperatures today for daytime highs, which are going to warm up into the 60s with daytime highs and the virtual maps. there is a lot of low to mid 60s on here but the numbers are a little deceiving. if you have a 20 miles per hour wind over here coming through the bay and even through the inland valleys, it will make these numbers feel lower. probably more like the upper 50s for daytime highs today. the sky continues to look pretty dramatic throughout

meteorologist darren peck is in our virtual view studio to show us how quickly things are going to change. >reporter>ok, quite the change coming our way as we've been talking about here from friday into saturday. there is a system that's going to brush the bay with the possibility of a few light showers. i think the amounts are still in question. likely. it's going to be about a quarter of an inch or less, but we're going to put some specific numbers on that in this visit, and the timing of it also appears as though by the time we get to sunday, we'll be able to clear it out of here. but stay on top of that forecast with us because all the system has to do is slow down a little bit, and we might be talking about a few light showers coming through. still on sunday. let's get a closer look at this system. see what this might look like. you can see how? by friday we've already got a pretty well developed front right off the coast. watch this thing. take a hard right turn and deliver just enough showers here throughout the day on saturday. that now we've got to talk about the possibility for

let's get to meteorologist darren peck. >> i love that view of the rain bands coming down behind alcatraz. let's look at the storm on the big picture. you can see plenty of lightning strikes which have moved into the central valley. look towards the west of the peninsula, santa cruz mountains. there's a good little crop of heavier rain just about to move up to skyline boulevard, saratoga gap, in fact, where sara was just showing us light snow. we'll see a little more over the next hour and maybe an isolated thunderstorm mixed in, much more detail in the full forecast. with what little time i have left now, the big picture view why this will take another day before it's done, the center of rotation, the water vapor does a great job visualizing these things. we're right in the middle of the bull's eye on the center of that low. that's why we're seeing hail and thunderstorms. when you get into the centers of these things, there's more instability. you can see that spin on the futurecast. that's why between now and midnight tonight would be one of the more likely time frames to see a few more

for more about the specifics and the science of the quake itself, let's bring in meteorologist darren peck. >> a couple ways to visualize this, sara, which i think might better wrap our minds around what happened. you see where the epicenter is in taiwan? you're looking at a shaking intensity map. and the areas over near the key show you when you get into those reds it was very strong shaking, which makes sense. this was a 7.4. that is a very powerful earthquake. loma prieta was 6.9. in that sense, this one was stronger. but that one was only half as deep as this one was, and you have to balance those two. by the way, the video of those newsrooms is from taipei. taipei is 80 miles away from where the epicenter was, ands the shaded in green, which is still fairly significant shaking, but it wasn't the worst of it. here's more relatively good news for taiwan. all of the black dots show you where the population centers are. so in one sense, the populated side of the island is the other side. but there is a city that was right next to the epicenter of this. and when you look at this map w

meteorologist darren peck tracking the big changes for us. >> it seems such a shame to have to do this after this day. first i want us to take a moment because we are right at the peak warmth of the day today. that is a fantastic early to mid-april day, plenty of sunshine and to take advantage of the virtual map, these are the current numbers. there's still plenty of low 80s at this point as we go into the 5:00 hour. pick out your part of the bay. this is the top. we are about 2 or 3 degrees warmer than we were yesterday. now let me show you how much colder it's going to be on saturday. the thing about saturday's numbers, most of them are in the 50s. it's going to be a big drop, not like an unbearable cold snap, but it's definitely going to be a significant turnaround and it is coming with rain. let's get a quick snapshot how this system comes together because by saturday morning we've got a pretty good band of rain coming across the city. if you watch the temperature progression on here, you can see how things just kind of go right along until saturday's big pool of cold air gets here
